Pulitzer Prize in Photography | The New York Times and Thomson Reuters

Consider the power of photography as you think about the inscription on a portrait from Charles Dickens' The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain: "Keep my memory green, and do not let me be forgotten." Mr. Redlaw, the chemistry professor, accepts the gift of forgetting from a ghost who visits Redlaw; however, Redlaw learns from his servant Milly of the importance of memory: "It is important to remember past sorrows and wrongs so that you can then forgive those responsible and, in doing so, unburden your soul and mature as a human being." Photography helps us to remember.
